What we do
Add a touch of elegance to your staircase with metal balusters. Combine plain, twisted, basket, knuckle, or round designs, as well as many other styles, to create a custom look.
Replacing outdated wood spindles with metal balusters is one of the easiest ways to give your staircase a fresh, updated look. Each baluster is carefully fitted and installed with attention to detail, creating a beautiful, lasting result without the need to replace your entire staircase.
Make an unforgettable entrance with a custom curved staircase. From the sweeping treads to the flowing handrail, every detail comes together to create a stunning focal point in your home.
Every curved staircase requires careful planning and precision craftsmanship. Handrails are custom-bent in our shop, then shaped and sanded by hand to create smooth, flowing curves that follow the staircase perfectly. The result is a one-of-a-kind design built to complement your home's architecture.
Bring warmth, character, and lasting beauty to your home with custom wood stair treads and rails. From timeless traditional styles to clean, contemporary designs, the right wood and finish can transform your staircase.
Choose from a wide selection of wood species, tread profiles, and handrail designs to achieve the look you envision. Every piece is custom-measured, crafted, and installed to fit your space, with careful attention to the details that make a staircase truly stand out.
Bring timeless charm to your staircase with classic balusters and beautifully crafted wood details. Paired with square or turned newel posts and a coordinating handrail, these styles create a warm, welcoming look that feels right at home.
Whether you're updating an existing railing or rebuilding your staircase, the right combination of balusters, newel posts, and handrails makes all the difference. From selecting styles that suit your home's character to the final installation, every detail is thoughtfully considered for a timeless, cohesive finish.
Keep your little ones and four-legged family members safer with a custom gate designed to complement your home. Beautifully coordinated with your stairs and railings, our gates make safety feel like part of the design.
Each custom wood gate is carefully measured, crafted, and installed to fit your space. With styles to complement both traditional and contemporary homes, these gates offer a practical solution for everyday use without compromising the look of your staircase.

Our story
Where It Started
Richard Kaplan started American Stair and Rail Artisans on his own in 1979, building the business from the ground up with hard work, quality craftsmanship, and a commitment to doing right by his customers. His wife Susan left her clothing store and joined him about seven years later, turning his growing business into a family business.
Building on the Foundation
Years later, Richard and Susan’s daughter Renee and her husband Steven joined the business, carrying forward the values Richard and Susan had established. They brought new ideas, technology, products, and opportunities for growth while continuing to build on the reputation their family had worked so hard to create.
A New Generation Steps In
Renee and Steven’s sons, Justin and Michael, are now becoming the third generation to work in the family business. They are learning it from the ground up while bringing fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a different understanding of technology and the world around them.
The Next Step Is Theirs
Nearly five decades later, the story is not finished. The company keeps evolving with new ideas, new technology, and new opportunities, while staying true to the values that started it all.
Frequently asked questions
Can you replace my wood spindles with metal balusters without replacing the whole staircase?
Yes. Swapping outdated wood spindles for metal balusters is one of the easiest ways to update a staircase. Each baluster is fitted and installed on your existing stairs, so there is no need to replace the entire staircase.
How long does a typical staircase renovation take?
Most stair and railing renovations are installed in two to five days on-site once materials are ready. Fully custom curved staircases take longer. We give you a firm timeline with your written estimate.
How much does a new staircase or railing cost?
Because every staircase and railing is measured and built around the home, we provide custom quotes rather than standard pricing. The materials, design, staircase layout, and scope of installation all influence the quote. We offer free on-site measurements and a detailed written estimate so you know what is included before moving forward.
Do you offer free estimates?
We do. We will come measure, talk through design and material options, and provide a detailed written estimate at no cost and no obligation.
What areas of New Jersey do you serve?
We service all of New Jersey. Our shop is in Jackson, and our crews travel throughout the state for staircase, railing and gate projects.
